RECYCLING BULLETIN BOARD
By Tracy Mirsky (485-9647)

Did you know —– you are paying TWICE for garbage removal? The first charge comes from the hauler. It is for the service that is provided by your hauler to remove the garbage from your curb. The second charge comes from the town’s tax base. It is the payment to CRRA (the Recovery Facility in Hartford that burns the garbage and hauls the ash residue to a dump. They also sort and sell all the recyclables and rebate each town $10 for every ton of recyclables sent to their facility. Harwinton is under contract with CRRA until the year 2012). Beginning July 1, 2009, the “tip fee” our town will pay to CRRA to accept our garbage will be $69/ ton. It will add up to approximately $200,000 over the one year period. That’s YOUR TAX DOLLARS PAYING FOR THE PROCESSING OF GARBAGE. Here’s a thought:

The town (YOUR TAX DOLLARS) will pay $69.00 per ton for garbage processing. The town will receive $10 per ton for recyclables, to be returned into the tax base.

Doesn’t it make sense to RECYCLE as MUCH AS POSSIBLE curbside so that the Town of Harwinton actually RECEIVES some money, and PAYS OUT LESS from the tax base as a result of lowering the tonnage from the GARBAGE?

PLEASE RECYCLE EVERYTHING THAT YOU CAN! CURBSIDE RECYCLING IS NOT AN OPTION – IT’S THE LAW! Call me if you have questions.

Buy carefully to minimize waste – share it – use it up – recycle it – FOR EARTH SAKE! ( and your wallet will thank you!)
