FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Clean Energy?
Clean energy is electricity from wind, solar, small hydro (water), landfill gas and other clean renewable sources.

What are CTCleanEnergyOptions?
The program was developed under the direction of the Ct. Dept. of Public Utility Control (DPUC) and others. It allows all customers of CL&P and UI to support clean energy for a small additional cost to their electrical bill.

What are my choices?
Two companies offer clean energy products in Ct.: Community Energy and Sterling Planet (our town has chosen Sterling Planet). Each company offers a slightly different product with a 100% or 50% option representing all or half your usage each month. For further details visit http://www.ctcleanenergyoptions.com

How much will it cost?
It varies depending on your usage. For a customer using 700 kilowatt-hours, the additional cost ranges from $4 – $9 per month, depending upon the chosen option.

Do I have to change from my electric utility?
No. You will still receive the same reliable service and a single bill from your utility company.

What if I decide to stop participating?
You simply notify your chosen clean energy company directly. There is no termination fee.

What difference does my enrollment make?
By increasing the amount of clean energy used to produce electricity in the power grid, you are decreasing the amount of fossil fuel used. This leads to cleaner air, healthier communities, and true energy independence. In addition, as mentioned above, your enrollment can help your community to earn a free solar energy system to be used on a municipal building.
